Albert Einstein once said, “Try not to be a man of success; rather become a man of values.” There is no wonder that man was one of the wisest and intelligent men the world has ever known; because he gave the advice needed to be successful in the most ironic way possible. Success, if you see, isn’t achieved by doing something extraordinary it is by setting some values and following them day in day out. Every single person who you consider successful today; you will have these values instilled in them. So here’s a list of things that highly successful people do differently.
They look after themselves
The first thought that came to you was, how is that going to make me successful. Success comes from toiling hard, giving all your time and dedication to your goal. Yes, you are right but if you don’t look after yourself you won’t be able to pull this routine for long. Highly successful people know this and hence keep a control over their health. They add exercise to their routine just as their work. Simple yet very very important.
They know that being busy does not mean being productive
How many times have you heard people canceling stuff saying I’m busy right now? This generation has all been about being busy thinking that somehow the more number of hours is gonna help them reach success faster. But the most successful people believe in work rather than the time they spend in the office. That’s where the difference in being productive and being busy is. Successful people know how to use their time by prioritizing their work and then doing them as per the urgency rather than trying to finish most of the work in a day. Try it and you’ll see that you have enough time to grab coffee with your friends.
This may be the most cliched topic in this list but it is one of the most important. If you don’t believe me just type ‘famous failures’ on google and you’ll see some very famous names. What can we learn from them? It’s very simple the more mistakes you make, the more you learn about how you will not be able to succeed. The faster you start doing it, the faster you’ll exhaust all the possibilities and reach your success. The only mistake we make is either never try things from the fear of failure or we dwell on our recent failures too long and then give up. Don’t be afraid to fail.
This may be the most crucial point in this entire list and there has been countless studies and books written about the importance of a ‘why’. The problem with most people is they never have a very clear idea about why they doing something. They mostly base it on money, fame, and status but those are very small reasons and can be achieved by doing almost anything. So why would you be an engineer, doctor or writer? Successful people have a very clear idea about why they are doing something. Think about why are you doing what you do and is it what you want and it will help you make some life changing choices.
This one is my personal favorite because I hear a lot of excuses when I talk about this with my friends. When was the last time you learned something new? You’ll have to think about it. This is where we are so different from the people who scale the heights of success. Highly successful people know that with a limited knowledge their success too would be limited and hence they want to gather knowledge as long as they live. This gives them the edge they need. Also, it needn’t be something related to your work it could be any new skill. Learning keeps your brain healthy and efficient.
I have seen a lot of people bragging about how good they are at multitasking and on a personal note, I think it’s not a very useful talent to have. The problem is when we multitask we are never able to give our 100% to any one of the works we are at. This shows that we are submitting poor quality work and in the long run risk our chances of success. As discussed earlier highly successful people know to prioritize things and then focus on them one at a time giving their undivided attention to the work at hand.
They keep a check on the people they spend time with
You definitely would have heard this, ‘tell me the 5 people you spend time with and I’ll tell you who you are.” It has been scientifically proven that we start adapting to the habits of people we spend the most time with. So if you constantly spend time with negative and demoralizing people you would always lack the enthusiasm to work and persevere for success. Successful people know this and hence choose their people very carefully. Why do you think most of the successful people were loners in their early years?
They know there’s more to life than work
“Don’t get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.” Most people get so busy chasing success that they forget that there is more to life than work. They neglect their friends, their family and everything that should matter to them. And when they the hard times hit they have no one to rely on. Successful people know the importance of balance in their life. They know that no matter how important work will always be just a part of their life and hence they remove time for friends, family, and health too.
Obviously none of these qualities guarantee you success but they will help you achieve your goals and make you a man of value and if you are lucky enough success will follow.
