The male condom is a form of contraception made for men. It also protects against sexually transmissible infections (STIs). This page explains you what is a condom, why you should use a condom, how a male condom can works and tells you how you can use it.
What is a condom ?
A condom is a fine barrier of latex or rubber which is rolled on to a man’s penis before having sex. It is used as a barrier to stop sperm and/or infections passing between sexual partners.
Condoms are used for vaginal, anal and oral sex.
Why should you use condoms ?
Condoms are used to protect against pregnancy and sexually transmissible infections like HIV.
If you compare with other methods of contraception they don’t protect you against STIs.
So if you cannot trust or do not know well your partner it is better to protect yourself by using condoms as well.
They are easy to get, to use, and have no side effects (unless you are allergic to rubber) and they help prevent cancer of the cervix.
How safe are condoms ?
If used correctly every time you have sex, meaning a new one and good quality one, condoms provide very good protection from pregnancy and infection.
A risks still exists and when meanwhile condoms are used correctly every time a woman and a man have sexual intercourse, two women out of 100 will still get pregnant each year. (Its around 99,9% sure)
Viruses such as HIV cannot pass through an unbroken rubber condom. On this level condoms are totally secure.
