The dating world of this era is complex. To many options available for you to choose from. Seems quite a treat if you are a free bird who values “no-strings-attached” relationships, but it can do you some serious damage as well. Likewise, an open relationship comes with its own set of challenges. While some might even question the need for it, well, it is just difficult for people to stay monogamous for a long time. They just end up cheating again and again. Often in an open relationship people might have a few set rules with their primary partners. However, the freedom to be sexually involved with someone is always open.
Often, it’s difficult for one of the partners to accept the fact that the one they are involved with is sharing the same bed with someone else. To be honest, open relationships isn’t meant for all. You might get lured into one when you are young and just to fit into being a part of a happening trend, be careful before you blindly follow the heard. You might want to know the following before you decide to be in one.
It is difficult to set priorities
Often when you are involved in an open relationship, you are torn between two people. Sometimes, these people might need you at the same time. How do you prioritise then? If you are someone who despite being polygamous wants to stay as nice as possible to everyone you love, you will find yourself being mentally stressed. It might fill you will guilt that your limitations don’t let you do justice to the relationships that you share with these people. There will always be a possible chance that one might end up giving more and the other receiving less.
Quite often triggers jealousy
Just like monogamous relationships, open relationships are not immune to jealousy and mistrust. The fact that you are in an open relationship, it does not mean that you will not develop feelings and care. It might so happen that all over them want to spend the most amount of time with you. So, when they know you are with the other person and ditching them it might trigger a negative response as jealousy is bound to crop up in human relationships. It is difficult to explain yourself to everyone because you might not just be in the right mood to justify your actions. There might come a point in your relationship where you get far too serious when you got involved. And it might be emotionally draining when that person isn’t too serious about you.
You might end up spending a lot
Multiple partners means that you will have to adjust to different whims and fancies in order to keep them going. Often there may not be any attachment which means demanding might be difficult for one while someone else might be reaping all the benefits. More often than not you will end up spending a lot more than you might be assessed. If you are well to do and can take up the burden, it’s all good. But if you are on the tighter side of budgets, an open relationship may not be your best fit.
Your family and the society still doesn’t accept it
No matter what you explain to people, they have their own set of opinions and belief systems. It is difficult to change their ideas. Monogamy is the most accepted form and you will definitely cause questions to be thrown at you wherever you go. Even if you may not entertain that, you will find it hard to shut everyone up. It is easier to have a successful relationship when your loved ones also accept your choices and motivate you. It can be terribly draining if you are constantly bothered with having to justify your choices.
STDs are more probable
Being in an open relationship means that you are more physically vulnerable. You are more prone to contracting sexually transmitted diseases if you are in an open relationship. The fact that those you are in an open relationship with are in turn involved with other people as well, you only create a chain of people who have compromised with their hygiene and well being. Even though you trust this person, it might just be out of ignorance or negligence that you might have an STD passed on.
Every relationship is based on honesty. Even if you are in an open relationship, you should be careful about the pros and cons so that you can make informed choices. there is no proven method to assess which kind of relationship works best for all. You are free to experiment like you wish but make sure you know what you truly want.
