I don’t know if I can call myself a feminist but I truly believe that women are far stronger than we men can ever be. The whole damsel in distress thing has been debunked in the 21st century by some great writers, poets and movie makers of this decade. No, it always feels nice to be wanted, to have someone who would protect you but it’s not gender biased anymore and it’s definitely not because women can’t take care of themselves. It’s because we are human beings and we all want to be loved and cared for. Here’s a list of 7 movies with female protagonists you must watch.
Million Dollar baby:
With the fact that this movie has two legends, Morgan Freeman and Clint Eastwood, this movie is about an underdog boxer(Maggie) who makes her name in the boxing ring just on the basis of her hard work and dedication with the help of her coach played by Clint Eastwood. Boxing or in all any physical sport has always been considered as Men’s sport where girls find difficult to make their name in. This movie leads to debunking all the BS fed to you over the years. The special thing about this movie is how Maggie fights in the real life too with all troubles we go through on a daily basis. With Morgan Freeman as its narrator, this one is a treat to watch.
Hunger games Trilogy:
A book turned into a movie is not my favorite, but if you don’t want to read it, The Hunger Games movies are a must for you. Panem is split up into 12 districts. Each year, every district is forced to randomly choose two tributes–one girl and one boy–to fight in the annual Hunger Games; where they fight till one of them dies on live television. Katniss, the narrator, takes her sister’s place this year and starts challenging the norms of the government. Played by Jennifer Lawrence, Katniss is one of the strongest woman characters both in literature and in movies. Split into three parts, this will help you tap into your inner Katniss for whom nothing is impossible.
Brave:
Yes, I still watch Disney movies. It just helps you believe in magic and dreams once again. But contrary to other Disney movies like Cinderella, The little mermaid, and more this movie isn’t about a damsel in distress saved by a prince; it is about a royal princess Merida who goes against the royal tradition of getting married at a particular age and makes her own path. While doing she accidentally puts her family in harm’s way. If you ever thought of you as a rebel or someone who doesn’t fit in societal norms of a girl, this movie will hit the spot. Disney is changing the world and giving us more female characters to look forward to, Merida is definitely one of them.
Juno:
Juno is a movie for a generation and teaches each one of us that major social issues can be talked about with a hint of humor and still be a great movie. Teenage pregnancy being one of the major issues of the 21st century, Juno touches this sensitive topic in a comic and emotional way. It not only addresses the medical aspects but also the mental aspects of the issue of teenage pregnancy. A brilliantly written script and some amazing casting made the movie a treat for everyone.
Miss congeniality:
One of finest roles ever played by Sandra Bullock as a solo lead in a comic film. The movie revolves around a stubborn FBI officer who goes undercover in a beauty pageant followed by hilarious goof-ups that would keep you rolling on your couch. It shows a determined Bullock getting back up stronger after every fall trying to make a name in the rather male dominated profession of FBI agents. It will just make her more endearing in your eyes.
The Blind Side:
This is my personal favorite movie of Sandra Bullock till date. A story about a foster mother (bullock) to a homeless young boy; Sandra plays one of the most endearing roles. She not only helps the boy but makes her part of the family and helps her to become one of the finest players in NFL. I will help you to appreciate the things in life a little more and will show you how important a family is. I recommend you to sit with tissues for this one.
Lara Croft – Tomb Raider
Being a huge action movie fan myself, this movie had to make this list. Angelina Jolie has always been the trendsetter in Hollywood and this is no different. I won’t talk about the storyline in much detail, but if you are into mystery and adventure, this movie is a must watch for you. Avoid the whole Brangelina breakup for some time and go watch this one.
