Angelina Jolie at AU summit: “There is a global epidemic of violence against women »

Hollywood star Angelina Jolie was invited to speak at the African Union summit in Johannesburg on Friday, June 12 and argued for a stronger commitment to protecting women.

« There is a global epidemic of violence against women – both within conflict zones and within societies at peace – and it is still treated as a lesser crime and lower priority,» Jolie said.

Angelina Jolie Pitt was appointed Special Envoy of United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Antionio Guterres in April 2012.

Jolie addressed leaders and said: “You can change your societies for the better. You can make protecting and empowering women the priority that it has to be.” And she added: “You can all make a decision, right now, in your own minds that you are going to commit to see this change become a reality.”

The actress and humanitarian ended her speech by stating that « there is no greater pillar of stability than a strong, free and educated woman, and there is no more inspiring role model than a man who respects and cherishes women and champions their leadership,’ The Daily Mail reported.
