DipaKarmakar–First Indian Gymnast To qualify for Olympics

22-year-old DipaKarmakar is the first Indian woman to qualify for Olympics. She won gold in vaults finals at the test event of the Rio Games. She stands as the 79th gymnast among individual qualifiers in the list of women’s artistic gymnast who have qualified for the Rio Olympics. Last year, she won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, Scotland.

No Indian has ever won a gold at a global event earlier and Dipa’s gold is the first time this is happening. She has qualified for the Olympics and then has won a gold now. It is fantastic stuff,” said international referee Deepak Kagra.

Along with being the first Indian woman, she will also be an Indian gymnast qualifying for the quadrennial extravaganza after 52 long years.She is one of the few female gymnasts to successfully land the Produnova and get the top score of 15.100 which is a combination of 7.000 for difficulty and 8.100 for execution and 0.100 for penalty. If the move goes wrong, it can be fatal.

Hailing from Agartala, Dipa never wanted to practice this game. It was only with the initiative of her father that she started liking the game. And as time passed, she improved drastically accepting her feats and breaking records.

Dipa has created history and brought glory to our country.
