A survey from Leadership IQ conducted across 312 businesses and involving 5257 hiring managers found that of the 20,000 people hired during the survey period about 46% fail within the first 18 months while only about 19% of the hires are successful in their job. The main reasons for the job failure were:
Coachability: About 26% of the hires were unable to accept and follow up on feedback from their bosses, customers and others
Motivation: 17% lacked the drive to realize their full potential
Emotional Intelligence: 23% failed in the emotional intelligence department i.e. they were unable to relate to other people’s emotion as well as assess their own emotions
Temperament: 15% did not have the personality suitable for the particular job
Technical Competence: 11% lacked the requisite technical skills for the job
In a large proportion of cases it was found that employees failed not because of the lack of technical skills but because of a lack of interpersonal skills. Therefore you need to pay a lot of attention to your interpersonal skills as that is a deciding factor.
