Summer scourge - How to protect your skinAll of us aware of the harmful effects of the sun on our skin, especially during the long summer months. The damaging rays of the sun give the skin a dull appearance and make us look older beyond our years. All of us have different skin types and depending on one’s skin type, we must use products that help maintain the youthfulness of our skin. Certain tips on how to have great skin this summer are mentioned below.

Dehydration of skin in summer results by the prolonged use of A/Cs, exposure to dust and pollution, stress and bad lifestyle choices. Today, a variety of moisturizers are available in the market that not only moisturize the skin, but most importantly, hydrate it. Simultaneously, the excess heat of summer stimulates the oil glands of our skin causing it to produce excess oil resulting in oiliness and dehydration at the same time. It is thus essential to go for exfoliating treatments during summer. One must exfoliate the skin at least once a week to help in greater penetration of moisture which will give us a smooth and younger looking skin.

Choose a face mask depending on your skin type but an ideal one would be a moisturizing mask that hydrates the skin and gives it a soft and radiant look without making it oily. A cleansing mask that detoxifies the skin is also a good bet during the summer months.

One must make sure to drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water in summer. This will not only check dehydration but keep our skin glowing. Carry a bottle of water with you when you go out and take regular sips to complete your daily quota of water intake.

When applying make-up in summer, see to it that you use a moisturizer that goes with your skin type. After applying the moisturizer, allow it to stay for 2 minutes and then blot off the excess with a tissue as allowing excess cream to stay in your skin will make it oily. During summer, we must take special care when going out in the sun. Apply a sunscreen lotion with SPF at least over 30 to protect yourself from the damaging rays of the sun. Restrict going out in the afternoon when the rays are the harshest and at their most damaging best.

For added protection, you can take Vitamin E and selenium supplements that protects you from inside. Application of Vitamin E and C will enhance the effectiveness of your sunscreen by preventing sun damage. If you are not that big a fan of taking vitamins, you can have certain foods which are rich in these nutrients. Almonds and hazelnuts are a great source of Vitamin E, thus having a few nuts daily will give you great looking skin. Ground linseed and fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids which nourish the skin and lead to smooth looking skin.
