Teenage acne control and prevention

During our teenage years we seem to go through a lot of physical and emotional changes. Acne is one of our constant companions during these times. During puberty our body is subjected to numerous hormonal changes which cause the sebaceous glands to secrete more sebum. Excess sebum causes clogging of the pores. Bacteria, oil and other impurities get caught in the pores resulting in acne. Acne is a common occurrence but that doesn’t mean it cannot be cured. Mentioned here are certain treatments which can help you get rid of acne.

  1. Cleansing

If you have acne then it is important that you clean your skin more often. Use a gentle face wash to clean your face. By cleansing your skin regularly, you prevent dust and oil from accumulating on your face which aggravate acne.

  1. Moisturizing

Certain acne products might irritate the skin and leave it drier than before. Use a moisturizer that is apt for your skin. People with oily skin should use gel based moisturizers while the ones with dry skin are advised to use cream based moisturizers.

  1. Use a toner

After cleaning your face, you should apply a toner to your face. Toner helps to tighten the pores thereby preventing dust and other impurities from entering and clogging the pores. Do not rinse off the toner after applying it, allow it to stay.

  1. Don’t touch your face

A lot of us have the habit of touching our faces on and off. People with acne must avoid doing this as touching might result in the spread of bacteria from our hands to our face leading to inflammation of the skin.

  1. Use salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid help in promoting new skin growth. These products which are available in the form of soaps and lotions can be used daily on acne spots. Try to use a product that contains less than 3% of these ingredients so as to avoid irritation.

  1. Use tea tree oil

Tea tree oil has excellent antibacterial properties that can help clean the skin of microbes which are responsible for clogging of the pores. Dab a piece of cotton with a few drops of tea tree oil and apply on the face. Refrain from using too much of this oil as it excess of it can irritate the skin.

  1. Use oil-free makeup

People with acne should avoid using makeup containing oils as they tend to clog the pores resulting in breakouts. Acne affected people are advised to use oil-free mineral makeup so that breakouts do not occur.

  1. Get adequate sleep

Sleeping is very rejuvenating for the skin as during sleep our skin gets to renew itself. It is therefore necessary that you sleep for at least 8 hours every day. Follow a consistent sleep pattern as that seems to be very beneficial for the skin.
