So, I interviewed her: a hotshot actress, an iconic sensation, a beautiful personality – Sunny Leone!
Karenjit Kaur Vohra (her real name), known to us as Sunny Leone, was born in Canada in 1981. She grew up with cold winters, surrounded by snowy landscapes.
Sunny Leone is a very interesting and diverse person: She is a business woman, a former porn star, a Bollywood heroine, a daughter and a wife.
Before entering the adult industry, she worked at a German bakery and then at a tax retirement firm. She entered the porn world at the age of 19. Her parents couldn’t come to terms with the way she led her life but they eventually had to accept their daughter’s choice.
Sunny Leone learnt soon how to stand up tall, to go her own way and eventually became very successful in doing so. She now is married to Film Producer Daniel Weber, whom she wed in 2011.
Entering the Bollywood industry was a very critical decision for her but when you have high hopes and determination to accomplish them, every obstacle gradually dies out.
Can you tell us about that one defining moment when you knew you wanted to be an actress?
When I was about 11 I took a photography class and that is when my interest peaked and my teacher mentioned to me I could be a model.
What kept you motivated?
What keeps me motivated is that I want to work and I want to work everyday. I have been given a chance of a lifetime and plan to harness this gift to the best of my ability.
Any personal ambitions unattained yet?
Yes, many…there is still so much that I want to achieve and I think I will always be like this throughout my life. Whether its in entertainment or in business I always want to keep pushing myself to the next level for our company and also personally.
Which was the most memorable time of your life?
I am not sure you can sum up someone’s life in one most memorable moment, but if I were to choose one that means a lot to me, it would be the day I married my husband.
What makes you angry?
People who don’t have a care for other human beings. To me it doesn’t matter where you are on the social ladder or financial ladder…if you are a nice person, that is what matters to me the most.
Who is Sunny Leone’s real life hero and why?
My Father in-law because I watch him work every single day still at the age of almost 71 and never complains and still wants to take care of his family. Even if all of us kids tell him to take it easy he still works hard to take care of all of us.
What is on your bucket list?
So many things I want to do…swim with the sharks, stay in a Buddhist monastery in silence for days, go back to Africa, have children, give more of my time to the needy, and so on…and so on…
You are India’s hottest sensation. Sunny Leone is the most googled word in India in 2015. What is the biggest mistake you made in your life?
My biggest mistake is not a professional one, it is personal. The day my mother passed away I didn’t get home in time to spend more time with her…I was working and got there as fast as I could but I wish I would have just been home all day. But we had no idea she was going to die. I always wish I would have gone home. I will never compromise my time with family ever again in my life! I don’t care what it costs me!
Tell us about your line of fragrances: Lust by Sunny Leone.
The fragrances have been something myself, Daniel and my team have been working towards for a while and it was quite a process to find the perfect scent.
Women witness worst forms of abuse in terms of rape threats, sexual harassment and stalking. How do you think can we combat these?
It all starts with education from the parents and from schools. As adults we know the difference between right and wrong and it is our job as adults to pass that along to young children so they grow up knowing these things are wrong.
What do you do when you are not working?
If I am in India, I read, watch my favourite TV shows or go to the spa. If I am in Los Angeles, I hike, I like to do shopping, make dinners for my friends and family, spend time with my brother and friends, play with my dogs all day, paint, go to museums, theatre plays, and nice dinners and so on, hahaha, there is a lot.
How do you respond to harsh criticism?
I brush it off. But if its constructive criticism then I try to absorb it and use it to learn from my mistakes.
What message would you like to give to the Indian women?
To always tell yourself to be strong and independent. I was taught at a very young age that I had to stand on my own two feet and that no one in life was going to help me. Work hard, stay strong mentally, and learn your craft (whatever it is) well and be the best you can be. Be professional and try and have a good attitude always because if its the difference between someone who knows a little more with a bad attitude and someone who knows a little less but a happy disposition…trust me, someone happy and eager to learn almost always works in your favor.
