Famous women in India – International media

The Indian film industry has had an illustrious history. The actors and actresses of Bollywood have been recognized for their stunning performances in movies. There are a lot famous women in India, so lets take a look at some of them:

Beginning with Suchitra Sen, the first ever-Indian actress to win an award in an international film festival, for her movie, Saat Pake Bandha, released in 1963. She won the Best Actress trophy for her role in the movie, at the Moscow Film Festival.

Besides winning international awards for their performances in movies, Indian actresses have won a number of pageant titles for their gorgeous, eastern beauty. Starting with the gorgeous, Rita Faria, who was crowned Miss World in 1966, followed by Zeenat Aman, who won Miss Asia Pacific title in the 1970’s.

In the year 2000, Priyanka Chopra won Miss World Pageant. Aishwarya Rai has won the award for Miss Universe pageant in the year 1994. Famous Bollywood Superstar, Sushmita Sen has also won the Miss Universe award.

Among the lesser-known beauties that won international awards, include, Diane Hayden, who won Miss World title in 1997. Lara Dutta won Miss Universe title in the year 2000. Nicole Faria became the first Indian to win the Miss Earth pageant for India in 2010.

Recently, there are a number of actresses who have won international recognition for their extraordinary performances in Bollywood movies. This famous women (actresses) have won IIFA Award for Best Actress awarded by the International Indian Film Academy. With the highest number of awards, Rani Mukherjee and Vidya Balan, have both won 3 IIFA Awards for Best Actress. The actresses who have won an IIFA award, in the order of years, are listed below:

  • 2009 – Priyanka Chopra for Fashion
  • 2010 – Kareena Kapoor for 3 Idiots
  • 2011 – Anushka Sharma for Ban Baaja Baraat

The IIFA Award Nominations for Best Actress Award include three nominations for Deepika Padukone for films, Chennai Express, Goliyaan ki Raasleela – Ramleela and Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani. The other nominated actresses for IIFA’s Best Actress Award for 2014, are Nimrut Kaur for the Lunch Box, Shraddha Kapoor for Asshiqui 2 and Sonakshi Sinha for Lootera. The 15th International Indian Film Academy awards are due to be held in Florida, United States.

Anjali Patil has graced the Indian cinema by winning the award for best actress at the prestigious 43rd Indian International Film Festival, for her role in the movie ‘Oba Nethuwa Oba Ekka’ (With You, Without You). The art movie aims to prevent gender-based violence in the South Asian region by raising awareness on the consequences and issues that arise out of gender socialization.

Apart from film awards, Indian actresses have also been recognized for their association and work with a number of charities. Just recently, Sushmita Sen was conferred with Mother Teresa Memorial International Award for her efforts toward achieving social justice for Indians. The award was bestowed by an NGO, The Harmony Foundation.
